Designed to attract the next generation of students

The Challenge

Swinburne University is consistently ranked in the top 3% of universities around the world that focus on the areas of science, technology and innovation.

Their primary website had an increasingly disjointed interface and user experience. This was affecting student and staff perceptions of the university and was affecting prospective students during their research process for enrolment.

Swinburne required a total redesign of their primary website. A responsive design was required to bring a consistent user experience and interface for all students, staff and researchers on desktop, tablet or mobile devices.

Our Approach

Swinburne were on a tight deadline, so we approached the project in 2 phases to achieve a rollout that worked.

Collaborating closely with internal teams we were able to refine the navigation and content structure whilst revitalising the site design from the ground up.

Being a large organisation, with many content contributors, we focused on producing a strong grid with modular design patterns that could be reshaped to suit the thousands of pages across the website.

During our design process we focused heavily on identifying what makes Swinburne University unique and looked for opportunities to inject this in an engaging way alongside other mandatory content. Further to this we also had to ensure the website was usable and met accessibility requirements for not just local students but also international students.

Alliance was also responsible for the front-end development of the project. Our team worked closely with internal Swinburne developers to meet the tight timelines.

The Results

All of this work culminated in producing a dynamic style guide of design assets and patterns that can promote consistent rollout and evolution of the design in the years to come.

The design and templates have been rolled out to the entire website.
